Students Can Stay Active, Healthy on Campus

By Dan Howlin

Student at the college can stay active and healthy just by being on campus, yet most don’t realize this.

Because it is a community college, many Suffolk students come to school and go home. Students are always in a rush to get home, get to work, get to the library, or get to the next class. Because of their hectic schedules most students don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to exercise and fitness. But what many students don’t realize is that Suffolk offers several programs and has many opportunities for students to stay active, healthy and fit, all while staying on campus.

Unbeknownst to most people, students can use the weight and cardio room for free. The cardio and weight room are open five days a week and offer students the opportunity to work out with many different machines and free weights . On Monday and Wednesday the weight and cardio room is open from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. On Tuesday and Thursday the weight and cardio room is open from 11 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. and on Friday the weight and cardio room are open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The weight and cardio room also reopens from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“The facilities here on campus allow students to stay active and healthy within the community” Stacey Whitman, who is a physical education professor on campus said. “All students are welcome to use the weight and cardio room, and it’s free!” said Whitman. Because most Suffolk students go to school and have jobs, it’s hard to find free time during the day to work out. “Most days I go straight from school to work, but the gym lets me workout in between classes” said student Joe Harris. “It’s also a great place to meet people and be involved with the community” said Whitman.

Intramural sports are another way to stay active and healthy on campus. Intramurals allow students who may not have the time to join and commit to a team. Intramurals, which are also free allow students to play with and against each other in many sports such as football, volleyball soccer and basketball. “Intramurals have allowed me to have a lot of fun at school and I have made many friends because of them” student Michael Lopez said. “A lot of people don’t know about our intramurals” said Whitman. “We encourage students to join, and they are free” she added.

Throughout the hectic school day, it’s had to find free time. That’s why being aware of the health and exercise opportunities on campus is so important. The cardio and weight room in the Brookhaven gym and intramural sports allow students to be active during their busy day.
