Halloween City Costume Store Offers Spooky Selection

By Barbra Donlon

It’s that time of year again! The time where everything suddenly changes from a summery bliss to Halloween spook!

As Halloween nears hundreds of “Halloween City” stores are popping up all over the United States especially here in New York. Formerly known as Halloween USA, Halloween City is a “pop up” store that usually is around for the months of September and October. Once Halloween is over the stores disappear as quickly as they came and you won’t see them around until the following year.

Some of the locations of Halloween City here on Long Island are Port Jefferson Station, Selden, Commack, Riverhead and more. You can visit their website here http://www.halloweencity.com for a complete list of locations.

The location that I visited was the Port Jefferson Station one. Located in the “Home Goods” shopping center, as it has been for the last few years, the store was definitely interesting to say the least. As I walked in it was almost as if I was walking in to a haunted house. Greeted by the employees, I saw a ton of decorations that suited my liking.

Not only does Halloween city sell costumes for all ages/genders, they also sell home decorations for the holiday and a lot of paper wares for parties. The decorations are unique and priced accordingly.

A decoration that particularly popped out was a witch that spoke eerie remarks as she stirred her “witches brew.” The decoration itself was very unique and quite clever. The price of that was a little high in comparison the store prices.

There was a huge selection of costumes. Everything and anything you could possibly think of was available at Halloween City. They have a variety for men, women, and children.

Organized to perfection, each row in the store has a specific section for what you are looking for. Not only is it grouped off my age and gender, but also genre.  There’s a section for horror, fairytale, Disney characters, the 20’s, the 80’s, couples costumes and more.

The costumes which caught my interest the most would have to be the children’s costumes. The wide selection in which they carry is phenomenal. They have the cutest costumes I have seen. From Minnie mouse to a Hershey kiss and everything in between. The pricing for children’s costumes start at $9.99 and go as high as $39.99.

The women’s costumes are just as great as the children’s. They carry what seems to be the most “popular costumes. Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, Little Miss Muppet, Alice in Wonderland, a ‘sexy’ nurse, and a lady bug, just to name a few. The costumes are made of good material and fairly priced. Starting off at $12.99 up to $59.99.

The men’s costumes are your typical Halloween costumes. Freddy Kruger, Michael Meyers, Jason, and more horror stars. They also carry some interesting costumes for men such as Elmo, the cookie monster and a crayola crayon. The men’s costumes start at $9.99 and go as high at $129.99.

Something that caught my eye would be the couple themed costumes. They have a variety of costumes for couples from a variety of TV shows and characters. They carry Wilma and Freddy Flintstone, Morticia and Gomez Adams, a football player and a cheerleader, plus a whole lot more.

The one thing I loved about the store would be the fact that they had dressing rooms for you to try on your costumes before purchasing them. I know I always like to try on things before I buy them. There dressing rooms are small and narrow and only covered by a small little sheet. They aren’t the cleanest of dressing rooms but they do get the job done.

Halloween City also carries a wide variety of accessories to go with the costumes. The accessories include bracelets, shoes, and stockings, make up, hair spray (color and non color.) and more. They also sell shoes. For the next two week there is a $10 off coupon for any pair of shoes priced at $24.99 or higher. The coupon can be found in the Sunday paper.

As I browsed through the costumes, I was approached by an employee. The employee mentioned to go on their website and sign up with my email for coupons. Interested to see what kind of coupons they had, I did. I have yet to receive any coupons so it’s not really beneficial to you.

While the store was set up nicely and the costumes beautiful, the store itself was a little dirty. The floors weren’t all that clean and the walls were just quickly covered with Halloween themed wall paper. The places looked like it needed a serious cleaning.

Besides the lack of cleanliness, the costume store is a great place to shop. With everything you need in one place, it makes costume shopping during this hectic time a little bit easier. With great prices and a huge selection it would be a loss not to take a few minutes of your time to take a look.

I would give Halloween City 9 out of 10.

  1. Halloween City should be boycotted at all costs!I applied for one of their temp positions, and was given a dishonest (bull ****) excuse as to why I was not being hired-“We want some one with a one year minimum of cashier experience” while I have multiple years of said experience!Maybe because I am white, or am a male?I will NEVER waste any money when I am able to at that place!
